If not an VR then I honestly don't know, the standard xianxia 'I have to get stronger' could work if done well. If it's an VRMMO then he should be looking for ways to level and evolve, take over territory, and whatever the objective of the game is. The MC should have clear goals or at least a rough idea of where he's headed, I most definitely don't want the story to revolve around the MC's diary of random events that happened. I despise any 'happy go lucky let's see what the Author throws at me and then I'll maybe react to it MC'.(The monsters can be both players or NPCs, but not humans, unless they are fighting together with an allied humanoid guild, faction, or country of course.) The story should be focused around this and the MC would obviously be controlling an Army (or part of it) of monsters like Overlord. Think along the lines of Hermes guild conquering most of the continent in LMS, Weed and Ark's massive siege battles. There should be a focus on things like fighting against other kingdoms for territory, castle sieges, and the like. If it's focused on ruling a kingdom like Re:Monster, Goblin Kingdom, Slime shittara w/e it's called, then I want it to be something more like a guild in an MMO, there has to be some actual competition and struggle between factions, kingdoms or guilds or preferably all, a bit chaotic mess would be ideal.
